Liverpool’s Mo Salah tests negative for COVID-19 and is available for Champions League clash

Mohamed Salah has resumed training with Liverpool after returning negative in his latest Covid-19 test and could be available for Wednesday’s Champions League game against Atalanta.

The Egyptian was diagnosed with coronavirus while on international duty with his country and subsequently missed Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday.

He has however tested negative since his return to England and was sighted at Liverpool’s new AXA Training Center with his team-mates in training.

Liverpool – needing only three points to qualify – will seek to maintain their 100% record in the Champions League this season as they face Serie A side Atalanta at Anfield on Wednesday (21:00 WAT).

Liverpool beat Atalanta 5-0 in Bergamo in the reverse fixture, with Salah scoring one of the goals. The 28-year-old has registered 10 goals so far this season, with two coming in the Champions League.

Liverpool have had to endure an injury-hit campaign this term, with center-back pairing Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk potentially out for the rest of the season.

Summer signing Thiago Alcantara, captain Jordan Henderson, and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold all remain unavailable, along with Guinean midfielder Naby Keita who was withdrawn from their game against Leicester City on Sunday with what looked like a muscular injury.

“Atalanta are a threat even without a point to prove. We were exceptional [in Italy]. We did everything right and it all came together. They’re a top team with a special way to play. I expect problems in this game,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool’s Brazilian Forward Roberto Firmino is also in contention to feature on Wednesday night after scoring his second goal of the season against the Foxes on Sunday.

“Scoring was always important for Bobby, but he is a complete footballer,” said Klopp.

“Football is like an orchestra and if you have different people for instruments some of them are louder, but all are important for the rhythm. Bobby can play without [goals] as well.”

“We always celebrate goals – but this one was really emotional. The players read the newspapers and they saw some of the criticism.”

Klopp, having been critical of this season’s hectic fixture schedule will have his sights set on securing early qualification from Group D, in a bid to pave the way for some key players to be rested for the final two games.

“There are so many games to play and we will try to be as spot on as we can in specific games. It’s not all worked on the pitch because the schedule doesn’t give us that time,” added the German.
