Spanish champions, Real Madrid, were handed a shock 1-0 defeat at the Bernabeu to newly-promoted side Cadiz. The loss marks Real Madrid’s first La Liga defeat in over seven months.
Anthony Lozano scored in the 16th minute to put Cadiz ahead.
He met Alvaro Negredo’s cushioned header after beating Madrid defenders Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane to lift the ball over keeper Thibaut Courtois into the net.
Zinedine Zidane made four substitutions at half-time in a bid to turn the game around but Cadiz were resolute enough to grab maximum points.
Luka Jovic was brought later on into the match and the Serbian striker soon put the ball in the net but saw his effort ruled out for a clear offside.
Vinicius Jr also missed the target with a free header while Karim Benzema struck the bar from the edge of the area as Cadiz hanged on to claim their first league win over Madrid since 1991.
Barcelona also lost surprisingly at Getafe and missed the chance to go top of La Liga.
Jaime Mata converted from the penalty spot early in the second half and it proved enough to lift Getafe up to second, level on points with leaders Real Madrid, who were beaten at home by Cadiz earlier on Saturday.
It was a frustrating evening for the Catalans as Lionel Messi hit a post for Barca in the first half while Getafe also hit the woodwork in the closing stages.
The defeat is Barca’s first under new head coach, Ronald Koeman, and it leaves them ninth in the table, three points adrift of Madrid with a game in hand.
Luis Suarez scored yet again to help Atletico Madrid defeat Celta Vigo 2-0 away from home.
The win, however, broke a short run of consecutive 0-0 stalemates against Huesca and Villarreal.
Suarez netted after a pass from Manuel Sanchez in the sixth minute at Celta’s Balados Stadium while Yannick Carrasco added a second goal in stoppage time.
Celta were denied an equaliser in the first half by the woodwork and goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Sevilla’s unbeaten La Liga streak was ended by Granada in the La Liga in the early kick-off on Saturday and would next visit Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.
It was Sevilla’s first loss in the league since February as Yangel Herrera who has scored five goals in seven matches in all competitions for Granada netted the only goal of the match.
Sevilla played the entire second half with 10 men too with Joan Jordan picking up two bookings for back-to-back fouls in first-half stoppage time.
