La Liga Roundup: Diego Simeone defeats Barca for the first time in the Spanish division; Real Madrid drew at Villareal

Atletico Madrid boss, Diego Simeone, finally ended his hoodoo against Spanish giant Barcelona on Saturday night as his side handed Barca a 1-0 loss at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The defeat makes it Barcelona’s third of the season as they dropped to 10th place in La Liga after going down 1-0 to Atletico Madrid.

Yannick Carrasco netted the only goal of the match deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half as he nutmegged Marc-Andre ter Stegen before slotting home into an empty net.

Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona side failed to summon anything from the match calling into question once again the direction of his side.

The defeat handed Atleti’s coach Diego Simeone his first win over Barcelona in 10 years, with Atletico going joint top of the La Liga Santander table.

Barcelona also lost their inspirational defender Gerard Pique to possibly a long-term injury during the match as he left the pitch in tears after Correa landed on the back of his leg.

The Catalans are already short for options in defense and Pique’s injury could mean midfielder, Frenkie de Jong might be asked to play alongside Clement Lenglet in central defender.

Villareal 1-1 Real Madrid: Moreno’s late strike cancels out Mariano’s early lead

La Liga Roundup

Villareal earned a point at home to Real Madrid on Saturday as Gerard Moreno’s late penalty helped secure a 1-1 draw to maintain their unbeaten home record.

Real Madrid took an early lead through forward, Mariano Diaz as they looked to put their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Valencia before the international break behind them.

However, Moreno who had missed a couple of opportunities to ensure his side drew level eventually made sure both sides share the points when he converted from the spot with 14 minutes left.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos missed out of the game due to a hamstring problem he sustained in Spain’s 6-0 Nations League win over Germany.

Eden Hazard also made a first appearance since November 3 following a positive Covid-19 test.

And the visitors needed just two minutes at Estadio de la Ceramica to announce themselves as Mariano headed home at the back post with the goal allowed to stand after a VAR check for a possible offside in the build-up.

Villarreal however didn’t go without a fight as they finally got rewarded late on in the game with a penalty kick that Moreno converted as both sides share the spoils.
