The FIFA Awards just concluded saw Real Madrid produce many of the ‘bests’ in the male category and worthily so, for their impressive displays last season but looking at the list of top ten goal scorers below, you may wonder what went wrong.
This post does not answer your question as we instead look at the men behind the goal stats of the opening 9 games.
1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) 11 goals.
A household name and a constant feature in the top goal scorers charts as well as assists, Messi has nearly been single handedly instrumental in Barcelona’s showing this season.
2. Cedric Bakambu (Villareal) 8 goals.
Villareal sits at 6th with Bakambu showing his clinical abilities for the yellow submarines.
3. Simone Zaza (Valencia) 8 goals.
Valencia look set to give all for the title challenge this season as Zaza keeps finding the back of the net week after week.
4. Antonio Sarabria (Real Betis) 6 goals.
Real Betis will have to do better on the other end of the field if Sarabria’s exploits in front of goal will count for much.
5. Rodrigo (Valencia) 5 goals.
Valencia have been amazing and may well give the title challenge a run and stop the three horse race between Barcelona and the two Madrid teams. Rodrigo joins Zaza in the charts.
6. Maxi Gomez (Celta Vigo) 5 goals.
Gomez has done well for himself and despite playing from the 10th position with Celta Vigo, he has proven to be a threat to any defense he encounters.
7. Sergio Leon (Real Betis) 4 goals.
Real Betis produce another name in the top ten list and Sergio Leon keeps on impressing.
8. Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad) 4 goals.
Real Sociedad have slipped to 9th after their fantastic start of the season and Oyarzabal has found it difficult to pick up his form.
9. Christhian Stuani (Girona) 4 goals.
With Girona at 15th, Stuani seems to move beneath the radar until he torments defenses.
10. Adruiz (Athletico Bilbao) 4 goals.
Adruiz is ever delivering despite the accumulating of age. Bilbao currently sit at 11th.
Both Madrid teams: Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid failed to produce any of the names on the list.
