According to The Olympian, the 78-year-old is accused of involvement in the misuse of funds intended for Kenya’s Olympic team at the Rio Games two years ago. Keino is alleged to have abused his former role as head of Kenya’s Olympic Committee to syphon about US$25,000 for his son to go to Rio.
Hassan Wario, a former sports minister who’s now Kenya’s ambassador to Austria, has also handed himself in. The two men failed to appear in court earlier this week when several others were charged.
The men are to defend themselves against accusations that state that they misused $545,000 that should have been used to fund the Kenyan team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Keino was resident of the Kenyan Olympic committee at the time.
Keino is a two-time Olympic champion, an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee and was one of the first athletes to be inducted into track and field’s hall of fame in 2012.
He was the forerunner for generations of Kenyan distance-running champions, winning gold in the 1,500 meters at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
