The Italian Serie A has seemingly suffered a setback in recent years with the drop in form of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma as they have left the mantle of impressive displays and title gathering to Juventus.
But the tide is moving and we gladly anticipate not just a domestic trophy upset but even an international trophy making its way to Italy at the end of the European season.
The goals tally show that they have got what it takes to battle any top team elsewhere and though Napoli recently lost to English club Manchester City, others keep showing the grit we have been missing the Italian teams for. Here are the current top goal scores in the league:
- Ciro Immobile (Lazio) 13 goals.
The Lazio hit-man is giving the European golden shoe a hint of what is to come and helping the team with 15 goals in all competitions for them in lesser amount of games.
- Paulo Dybala (Juventus) 10 goals.
Dybala will do better if pundits stop mentioning Messi each time his name hits the headlines as the attacker is taking charge of things at the Turin club and sending panic ahead of him to opposition defenders.
- Mauro Icardi (Inter Milan) 9 goals.
It sounds unfair to his teammates to keep screaming his name alone but it is not out of place to say the resurgence of Inter to the top will be hinged on the striker.
- Dries Mertens (Napoli) 7 goals.
He scores every time or if you don’t find him netting goals, then he is creating them. An all-round attacker, Mertens is a beauty to watch (from the safety of a fan viewpoint).
- Edin Dzeko (AS Roma) 7 goals.
It should be no surprise that he made the list (though many strangely seem surprised), Dzeko has always been one to find the back of the net and he is largely underrated but Roma will do well to support him if they are to get something from their campaign.
- Cyril Thereau (Fiorentina, Udinese) 6 goals.
An unknown soldier but a worthy one at that. His move to Fiorentina from Udinese caught the eye has he has proven to be a smart buy for the club.
- Fabio Quagliarella (Sampdoria) 5 goals.
At 34 years of age, the Italian striker still proves to be a handful for defenders and a goalkeeper’s nightmare with his experienced finishing and keeps Sampdoria floating.
- Jose Callejon (Napoli) 4 goals.
Brilliant on the assists, fantastic on the flank, skillful dribbles and cool finishing: Callejon never fades (at least not truly). He is another Napoli player on the list that shows the form the Naples club is on.
- Roberto Inglese (Chievo) 4 goals.
Chievo have many reasons to be glad that Inglese plies his trade for them as they owe some portion of their display to him, they currently sit 7th on the table.
- Luis Alberto (Lazio) 3 goals.
Alberto has been the support for Immobile that he needs as they continue to fight to keep the top four within their reach.
The Serie A will come for Europe and may succeed in conquering.
