French Open 2020: Men’s and Women’s Draw revealed

World No 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic will begin his pursuit of a second title in Paris against Swede Mikael Ymer when the French Open kicks off.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal will face Belarusian Egor Gerasimov but he also finds himself in the same half as US Open champion Dominic Thiem, who opens against Marin Cilic.

Nadal could also face a potential last-eight clash with US Open runner-up Alexander Zverev, who has never made it past the quarter-finals at the clay-court Grand Slam.

In one of the blockbuster first-round clash at Roland Garros this year, Andy Murray who was given a wild card has been drawn to face former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka.

Murray, however, beat the Swiss for his first singles title since career-saving hip surgery at the European Open in Antwerp last October.

All eyes on Serena as she continues her quest to equal the record-tying 24th major title

Serena Williams will again continue to shoulder the pressure that comes with her record-tying 24th major title in Paris.

French Open 2020 Women's draw

The 23 times Grand Slam winner could face a familiar foe, Victoria Azarenka, across the net in the round of 16 who spoiled Williams’ party at the US Open just a couple of weeks ago in the semi-finals.

Azarenka, the No.10 seed, could square off against unseeded Venus Williams in the second round.

Serena, a three-time Roland-Garros champion, opens with American Kristie Ahn and could take on Tsvetana Pironkova, who took her to three sets in a tense US Open quarter-final earlier this month, in the second round.

Azarenka and Serena have met 23 times in their rivalry, but only once at Roland Garros, where Williams prevailed in three sets in 2015.

British No 1 Johanna Konta will also face Coco Gauff in the first round of the French Open, which starts on Sunday.

Konta and Coco are yet to face off and the British No 1 goes into the Slam off the back of a third-round exit from the Italian Open in Rome.

Konta recently parted ways with coach Thomas Hogstedt following a trial period together, deciding that they are not the right fit.

Gauff, now up to 51 in the world rankings will be making her first appearance in the main draw of the French Open.

Simona Halep is the top seed at Roland Garros after she was crowned Italian Open champion and will face Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the first round.

This third Grand Slam of the year is going ahead without a number of notable players, including the defending champion Ashleigh Barty, who has decided against travelling to Europe because of concerns over COVID-19.

Naomi Osaka, the recent US Open champion, is also out due to the hamstring injury that she managed in New York and Bianca Andreescu’s injury woes also mean that she has called it a day on her season.

Meanwhile, tournament director Guy Forget, said organisers are still hoping to have 5,000 fans a day through the gates at Roland Garros.

New restrictions were released by the French minister on Wednesday limiting attendances at sporting events to 1,000 in several areas including Paris because of a rise in coronavirus cases.

Forget, during a press conference, says: “We are still hoping to get 5,000 fans. The last we’ve heard officially from the prefecture of police is 5,000 is very, very safe.”
