Cruella de Vil (sometimes misspelt as Cruella Deville) is a villain created in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. After appearing in Walt Disney Productions’ 17th animated feature film, “101 Dalmatians” (1961), the character has continued to reappear. Its most recent appearance will be in a spin-off of the two previous “101 Dalmatians” (1996) and “102 Dalmatians” (2000) films.
Ahead of the 28 May 2021 theatrical and Disney+ with Premier Access release, here are five important details you should know about Cruella de Vil:
1. Background and name origin
Cruella de Vil is a pampered and glamorous London heiress, according to the original idea. Her name is a pun of the words “cruel” and “devil”. Also, it is a literary allusion to the name “Count De Ville”, which was Dracula’s other name in the 1897 Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula”.
2. Why does Cruella De Vil hate dogs?
She wants to skin them and use their fur for outfits; this has been the most prevalent reason behind her cruelty and hatred for dogs (or can we say her ill-intentioned love for dogs?). In addition, she prefers to skin puppies because when short-haired dogs grow older, their fur becomes very coarse, and it does not make good fur coats in the fashion industry.

3. Why is she so evil?
Like many villains, Cruella is after getting what she wants no matter who gets hurt in the process. Her greed and selfishness puts her in pole position as the leading and scariest Disney villain. Her nearly relatable story of a victim-turn-oppressor will also have some fans questioning their allegiances.
4. Are they remaking 101 Dalmatians?
No. Cruella is not a remake of the 1962 animated film 101 Dalmatians, written as “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”. Instead, it will serve as a prequel to understand how Estella, an ambitious and aspiring fashion designer, turned into the criminal obsessed with dalmatian furs.
5. Emma Stone as Cruella Deville
Since the live-action film was announced and the original script was made ready, Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award winning actress Emma Stone was cast to play Cruella de Vil. To make her into the fictional cartoon character, Disney enlisted MAC cosmetics.
Viewers should get ready to see a hot Emma Stone wearing the signature bright-red lipstick, two-toned hair, and maniacal smile that Disney villains are known for. You can see the official trailer below:
