Its no surprise then, that seeing how huge the profits from the remakes are (averaging a billion dollars per film at the box office), Disney is making even more of them.
From the live-action Cinderella movie, to Beauty and the Beast, to The Lion King, Disney seems determined to remake all their star movies.
The latest in these offerings is the well-loved Chinese tale of Mulan (played by Liu Yifei), who poses as a man and takes her ailing father’s place in the army.
This live-action remake was first made in 1988 and is loosely based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan.
Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan is directed by Niki Caro, and unlike previous remakes, it will digress from the original storyline quite a bit.
Mulan will not be a musical, neither will it include her beloved dragon pet, Mushu, or her love interest, Shang as Disney seeks to go for a more grounded narration of the story.
This can be seen in Disney’s final full-length trailer which was released over the weekend during the Super Bowl.
The synopsis reads: “When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father.
“Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honoured warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation and a proud father.”
