Champions League Roundup: Marcus Rashford bags a hat-trick as Manchester United thrash RB Salzburg; Chelsea dominant against Krasnodar

Marcus Rashford activated primal mode to hit a quickfire hat-trick whilst also coming off the bench as Manchester United thrashed RB Leipzig 5-0 in the Champions League.

Mason Greenwood was quick off the mark to break the deadlock in the first half as Leipzig failed to counter before Rashford, who came on in the 63rd minute, took charge.

The England striker, who has been making headlines off the pitch for his campaign against the government over free school meals for school children, scored twice in four minutes after being introduced, before Anthony Martial added a fourth, his first goal of the season, from the penalty spot after the Frenchman was brought down by Marcel Sabitzer.

Rashford, however, didn’t seem to have done as he rounded off United’s perfect evening, completing his first senior hat-trick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made it back-to-back wins in Europe to go top of Group H.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was happy with the squad after their emphatic win over RB Leipzig and heaped praises on the team.

It was a case of using the squad. We had to rest a few players and the ones who came in did brilliantly.”

“We had to work hard for this, they really made us work hard off the ball and on the ball as well because they counter pressed. The intensity of their play was incredible”

“After 2-0, of course, they open up, go for goals and the spaces opened up for our fresh legs out there.

It’s very good to know for the players that we have a strong squad to pick from. We are very happy with the start. We have played against two very good teams, two difficult games, and we have performed fantastically. We showed our own quality and if we focus on the next job and the next job and the next job who knows how far they are going to go. We go to Istanbul next week wanting three points there as well.”

Krasnodar 0-4 Chelsea: Rampant Blues ran riot in Russia

Frank Lampard’s boys gave a solid show in Russia as they took a rampant 4-0 win over Krasnodar, with Hakim Ziyech scoring his first goal for Chelsea while Edouard Mendy also kept his fourth clean sheet in a row.Champions League roundup

Jorginho had missed a penalty for Chelsea early on as they look to get their first win in Group E. However, Callum Hudson-Odoi quickly rectified that. He took advantage of a howler from Krasnodar goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to put Chelsea ahead in the 37th minute.

The Russians showed a different side to their football after the break but a flawless Eduoard Mendy and the crossbar kept the Russians out.

Timo Werner then got the insurance goal after a controversial handball call against Aleksandr Martynovich, before Ziyech and substitute Christian Pulisic added the finishing blow to FC Krasnodar.

Chelsea have now kept back-to-back clean sheets in all competitions for the very first time under Lampard and also recorded shutouts for the first time in successive away games under the former Chelsea midfielder.

It’s also no fluke that the arrival of Mendy between the sticks has had a huge influence on this Chelsea team.

Unlike Chelsea’s former number 1 choice goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga, there’s an air of calmness that surrounds every decision he has to make.

Although there were no standout moments, Mendy made four saves to preserve this clean sheet as he answered the call with no fuss whenever he was called upon.

Frank Lampard says: “I was aware he [Roman Abramovich] was here. It always makes us happy. I always feel his support whether here or not. It’s a nice bonus for him to be here for myself and squad. I didn’t manage to see him but a couple of my staff members spoke to him. And I’m pleased we put on a good performance in his home country. Hopefully, we made him happy.

Jorginho has been incredibly successful from his penalties. When you take that many there will be periods when you miss one or two. No problem with his style of taking them. Timo, I know is very capable. We have other players. We’ll talk about how we move forward.”
