Champions League Matchday 6 Roundup: Liverpool denied by VAR; Aguero scores on his return from injury as City grabs winner

Liverpool got off to a bang in their final group game of this season’s Champions League when Mohammed Salah scored inside a minute.

The Egyptian took advantage of a poor pass by Midtjylland, driving through the midfield with the stretch of captain Erik Sviatchenko unable to stop him before a well-timed poke through the goalkeeper’s legs did the job.

Salah then almost made it two after he collected a lovely pass from Minamino, but Hansen denied him at the near post while the offside flag also went up.

Liverpool who have also never conceded to a Danish side in the Champions League before did so on Wednesday as VAR controversy ensued while Midtjylland was awarded a penalty in the 61st minute.

Scholz confidently dispatched the spot-kick past Kelleher for his second Champions League goal of the season.

Despite Jurgen Klopp introducing a raft of Liverpool stars, it was actually Midtjylland who looked the more likely to score next.

In fact, they did in the 77th minute, but VAR intervened to deny Scholz’s second of the evening.

The technology apparently was not done there as Minamino was denied a late winner. VAR stepped in and eventually disallowed the goal for handball against Mane in the build-up to the goal as the game ended all square.

Man City 3-0 Marseille: Pep Guardiola’s side ended their Champions League group stage on a high

UEFA Champions League

Sergio Aguero painted his return from injury beautiful with a goal as Manchester City sealed off their Champions League group campaign with a 3-0 win over Marseille at the Etihad Stadium.

The 32-year-old, having recovered from niggling knee surgery this season poked home from close range after coming on as a second-half substitute for only his fifth appearance of the campaign.

Ferran Torres had opened the scoring with his fourth Champions League goal of the season earlier in the half. He slid home from a deflected Riyad Mahrez pass as City swiftly put a subdued first-half showing behind them.

Raheem Sterling who also came on as a second-half substitute then rounded off the victory with a goal of his own.

The victory could potentially be ideal preparation for Saturday’s Manchester derby, with Pep Guardiola able to make nine changes from the side that faced Fulham in City’s last game, handing a Champions League debut to back-up goalkeeper Zack Steffen as they made it five wins from six group games.
