American actor Will Smith has confirmed that he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, are in an open marriage and that they are polyamorous.
According to Smith, who revealed this in a new interview with GQ, his marriage was initially monogamous. However, they eventually opened their relationship after realising that they were both miserable and had to change something, following an argument on Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday.
The revelation addressed the public perception that Will Smith was a long-suffering husband who Pinkett Smith had cheated on.
Recall that in the summer of 2020, singer August Alsina, 29, revealed that he had previously had an affair with Pinkett Smith, 50. To read more, see our article on it here.
The couple confirmed it when they appeared together on her show, Red Table Talk, days later, tagging it an entanglement.

Part of Will Smith’s revelation reads: “Jada never believed in conventional marriage. Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up.
“There were significant, endless discussions about ‘What is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple?’ And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.
“We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody.
” But the experiences that the freedoms we’ve given one another… and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love. “
After Will Smith’s interview, Jada made a reaction on Instagram on Monday, 27 September 2021 though not linking it to her husband’s interview.
She wrote: “It’s so easy to forget how this Universe is abundant with unlimited amounts of Precious Love for each and every one of us.
“May every cell in our hearts learn to receive all the Precious Love the Great Divine has in store for us all.”
Will Smith and Jada Smith have been married for almost 25 years, after tying the knot in 1997.
