Mac Miller’s alleged drug dealer charged with drug distribution

Almost on the date of the anniversary of the Mac Miller’s death, a man who reportedly sold drugs the late Mac Miller overdosed on in September 2018 has been charged to court according to multiple US news outlets.

Mac Miller died of an accidental drug overdose on 7 September 2018. Authorities have alleged that on the morning of 5 September 2018, 28-year-old dealer Cameron James Pettit supplied Miller with counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained fentanyl, which is estimated to be somewhere around 100 times stronger than morphine.

Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick, was found dead at his home in Studio City two days later.

After Miller’s death, Pettit allegedly messaged a friend on Instagram: “Most likely I will die in jail.” He followed up with, “I’m gonna get off the grid. Move to another country.”

Investigators said they believe Miller’s death was caused by the fentanyl-containing drugs supplied by Pettit.

Fentanyl disguised as a genuine pharmaceutical is a killer—which is being proven every day in America,” United States Attorney Nick Hanna says in a press release. “Drugs laced with cheap and potent fentanyl are increasingly common, and we owe it to the victims and their families to aggressively target the drug dealers that cause these overdose deaths.

Pettit was charged with one count of distribution of a controlled substance Wednesday in a criminal complaint from the Central District of California. He was named as one of three people responsible for the supply of fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills alongside two unnamed individuals.

The charging documents state that authorities executed search warrants at multiple locations including the rapper’s home, and plastic bags containing Xanax, cocaine, and fentanyl were discovered. At the time of Miller’s death, traces of cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol were in his system.

If convicted of the drug charge, Pettit will face a maximum 20-year prison sentence.

Fentanyl is the same drug that contributed to the deaths of Prince, Tom Petty, and Lil Peep. Just last month, the U.S. Justice Department seized enough fentanyl to kill somewhere around 14 million people in a three-state drug bust. Some of the deadly opioids were traced back to Shanghai, China, with dealers exporting the drugs through the U.S. Postal Service.

Miller, who was 26, struggled with addiction. He dated Ariana Grande, who attributed their breakup, a few months before his death, to his difficulties staying sober. Miller had been charged with DUI a few weeks before his death.
