A superstar named Lorde

Lorde is set to drop her first major project, “Solar Power,” since 2017 and we look at some of her greatest hits here. Since bursting into the international stage in 2013, she has garnered a cult-like following.

Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor (born 7 November 1996) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter. She is known by her stage name, Lorde. She grew up in the Auckland suburbs and showed an early talent for public speaking. After an agent saw footage of her singing at a middle school talent show, she was signed to a development contract with Universal Music Group at the age of 12. Her stage name was inspired by a lifelong fascination with royalty and aristocracy, though she added an “e” to the end to make it seem feminine.

She explained this in an interview with Interview magazine:

“When I was trying to come up with a stage name, I thought ‘Lord’ was super rad, but really masculine — ever since I was a little kid, I have been really into royals and aristocracy,” the singer told Interview magazine. “So to make Lord more feminine, I just put an ‘e’ on the end! Some people think it’s religious, but it’s not.”

Lorde worked with producer Joel Little and the pair produced “The Love Club”, a five-track EP that was released for free to the Internet-streaming service SoundCloud with little fanfare in 2012. Her mother is an award-winning poet and would be considered an influence in Lorde’s poetic lyrics. Lorde’s music is undeniably linked to the fact that she writes almost all of it herself. Each track is compelling due to her cryptic, descriptive, and personal lyrics.

“The Love Club” EP had its single, “Royals,” soar to the top of the New Zealand charts. Lorde soon became the first female solo artist in 17 years to top the Billboard alternative chart in August 2013. “Pure Heroine”, Lorde’s first full-length album, was released a month later. Lorde won Grammy Awards in 2014 for best pop solo performance and song of the year for “Royals.”

Lorde has won two Grammys, two Brit Awards, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe. She was named to Time’s list of the most influential teenagers in 2013 and 2014. Lorde was also on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in 2014. Lorde had sold over five million albums worldwide as of June 2017.
