A letter written to Prince Philip by Princess Diana has now been released and it shows that Prince Philip disapproved of his son’s love life.
It is believed that the Queen wrote to the unhappy married couple to recommend they divorce when things got messy between the royal couple. But Prince Philip openly took his daughter-in-law’s side during that period. Unearthed correspondence between himself and Diana shows what he really thought of his son divorcing the Princess of Wales.
In a letter written in 1992, Philip told Diana of his and the Queen’s disapproval of their son’s love life. In the letters, Prince Philip called his son “silly” for risking “everything with Camilla for a man in his position”.
Signed lovingly with “fondest love, Pa”, Philip wrote:
“We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her.
I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind would leave you for Camilla. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”
Prince Philip also sympathised with Diana and offered his support. He also offered to mediate in the war going on between her and her estranged husband, Prince Charles.
Although Philip was sympathetic, he also made it clear to Diana that he would not support her having new romantic relationships.
He wrote:
“We do not approve of either of you having lovers.”
He also said Diana was partly to blame for the breakdown of her and Charles’ marriage.
He added:
“Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’s relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behaviour towards him in your marriage?”
To make matters worse, an intimate telephone conversations between Princess Diana and close friend James Gibney were leaked and published by The Sun. During the call, she said her situation with Charles and Camilla was like something that would happen to a character in EastEnders.
