It has been a dramatic 24 hours since Kevin Hart’s interview with Sunday Times, where he expressed his thought about cancel culture. The internet reacted in a not-so-pleasant way to his recap of the events that got him cancelled in the not-so-distant past and almost ended his career.
As we reported yesterday, the comedian, while promoting his upcoming film Fatherhood, answered questions about cancel culture, mentioned his old homophobic tweets and the backlash that followed it.
“If somebody has done something truly damaging then, absolutely, a consequence should be attached, but when you just talk about…nonsense? When you’re talking, ‘Someone said! They need to be taken [down]!’ Shut the f___ up! What are you talking about?” Hart said.
His words did not go down well with people, and angry tweeps took to Twitter to express their reservations. Many claimed the comedian is actually not funny and that his comedy has become less entertaining as he got bigger.
Kevin had time on his hands on Tuesday and gave it back really hot to the naysayers.
For context, see where it all began: Kevin Hart says cancel culture would have stopped his rise as a comedian
“I have 3 stand up comedy specials that fall in the top 10 highest grossing comedy specials of all time….2 of my specials are in the top 3 of all time… I’ve been the highest grossing comedian in entertainment for years now….I have also been the highest grossing comedian in the box office with over 4 billion in earnings, [sic]” Kevin tweeted
“I have also turned my comedic talent into a place of business and branding and radio and other revenue streams….The hate/slander fuels me to do more,” he continued. Kevin concluded saying: “J Cole said it best ‘If ur laughing at a millionaire the jokes on YOU’ …..Now back to ur regularly scheduled program. Live love and laugh!!!!”
As the comedian and actor explained in his earlier interview; he has been cancelled more than three times in the past. He, however, claims he doesn’t let that bother him, so it has no effect.
It is hard to tell what exactly in his interview triggered the backlash. The internet however seems to be always ready for a fight. As usual, the noise is expected to soon die down, and as Kevin said, it will be regular programming again.
