The club took to twitter to explain the players’ decision to join the #TakeAKnee movement with the tweet:
“Hertha BSC stands for tolerance and responsibility. For a tolerant Berlin and an open-minded world, now and forevermore.”
The Berlin club took the action prior to kick off of their clash with Schalke 04 in the domestic league.
The movement started after NFL player Colin Kaepernick took the pose as a sign of protest when the National anthem was being sung because “Police brutality has become an incredibly polarising and contentious issue in American life. This has come as a result of repeated videos showing police shooting and killing unarmed black men, which have been posted online and gone viral — illustrating the brutality that black people in America must contend with when dealing with some police officers, who often do not serve any prison time for pulling the trigger.” (The Guardian).
Colin Kaepernick started the movement that has now garnered lots of support despite criticism from some pundits who say football should be free of politics.
