After the victory that saw the Super Eagles assure themselves of a spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, news made rounds that five fans had reportedly died during a scuffle between themselves that also involved security operatives employed for the occasion. It is important to note that the NFF are also currently paying a fine of 11million Naira for pitch invasion by Nigerian fans during the match against Cameroon and may fine them again if the reports are confirmed.
However, the NFF have denied the deaths through its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, they said:
“There is absolutely no truth to the report that some fans died.”
“Naturally, considering the nature of the particular match, so many fans wanted to watch the match live, and there were some pushing and shoving at the gates.
“We are in contact with the Akwa Ibom State Government and we can confirm that nobody died.
“A few persons suffered injuries but they are in hospital and their progress is being monitored”.
