At the height of the protests, Tiwa Savage took to Instagram Live to call on Beyonce to use her voice to bring awareness to the situation.
She said: “I’m calling on Beyonce and her team, the same way they used their platform… to elevate and to show the world that Black is King and how beautiful Afrobeat and Africa our culture is. I want them to please use their voice and their platform right because the same country that birth this genre (Afrobeat) is on fire right now.”
Beyonce did take to social media to share a statement on the issue, saying that she was working with coalition groups to help with the situation.
Her mother did take to Instagram to share a now-deleted post where she shed more light on the situation.
Tina Knowles said that Beyonce heard about the protests a week before but could not follow up due to some serious family challenges, she could not follow it up.
She also addressed those who accused Beyonce of profiting off ‘Black Is King’ which featured Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Yemi Alade, Wizkid amongst other Africans.
“She Makes a record and uses all African artist, producers, writers. She is criticized because She didn’t get artist from every country in Africa there are 52 countries! Then she makes a film that by the way she doesn’t profit a penny off of, because she spent every penny in the budget on making something that celebrates our heritage! What profiting off of you did she do? She made art!! She is an artist! That is what artist do. She is not your political leader and not your whipping board.”
In the second part of the post, she said that she was appalled to see someone that was in constant conversation with Beyonce’s team call her out on social media instead of reaching out through her team. She wrote:
“Someone that was on the last project who BTW is in constant contact with her team decided that instead of contacting her team and asking her to post to assist in spreading the word . I am appalled that They would get on social media and do it !! Why not ask the people you are dealing with all the time????? On her team!! I don’t understand that !!! I am sure at the time she was not thinking straight because of the trauma that the country was facing but come on!!!!!!”
When Tiwa Savage caught wind of the statement, she replied simply, “We all have mothers o”
