Another top Bollywood actor, Amitabh Bachchan tweeted on Thursday: “Rishi Kapoor gone….Just passed away… I am destroyed.”
His family released a statement on Thursday, stating that the actor was hospitalized in a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday and died on Thursday. This is coming only a day after another top actor, Irrfan Khan died of cancer.
The actor had been suffering from Leukemia for the past two years. He returned to India in September after undergoing treatment in the US for more than a year.
He was hospitalized twice in February. Actress, Priyanka Chopra took to Twitter to share a tribute to Rishi Kapoor, writing:
“My heart is so heavy. This is the end of an era. #Rishisir your candid heart and immeasurable talent will never be encountered again. Such a privilege to have known you even a little bit. My condolences to Neetu maam, Ridhima, Ranbir and the rest of the family. Rest in peace Sir.”
Prime minister of India, Narendra Modi described Kapoor as a powerhouse of talent. He wrote:
“Multifaceted, endearing and lively…this was Rishi Kapoor Ji. He was a powerhouse of talent. I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.”
Rishi Kapoor has starred in several movies including ‘Laila Majnu’, ‘Debt’, ‘Moonlight’, ‘Sometimes’, ‘Sea’, and ‘Lightning’. In 1999, he directed ‘Let’s Go Back’.
He is survived by his wife, Nitu Singh, his son, Ranvir Kapoor, and his daughter.
