There have been talks that are leading to tension among both staff and student bodies within the country regarding the possibility of resuming the ASUU strike that was suspended last month on the basis of the Federal Government reaching an agreement with the Union’s heads to meet their October deadline of paying off every debt they owe.
Lecturers have mainly been the source of the stories as they have let it out that to their knowledge the Government have done nothing towards paying the bills that have accumulated to a sum of N220 billion for agreements reached between ASUU and the FG.
Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi who is the president of the union have spoken to The Nation saying:
“We are engaging them and we are making some few progress and we hope they will keep their promise. Otherwise, our members are ready to activate their action. We are still in October, but we are on our guard. I cannot say whether there will be any action at the end of October or not. It is what our members say that we shall do. I hope I am very clear? Our members shall determine what we shall do at the end of the deadline based on the level, of implementation”.
The Government had earlier agreed to at least do something towards clearing the debt to show good faith and prevent the union from resuming the strike. Students are advised not to panic as the strike can still be prevented by action from the Government.
