The Italian announced that he would retire at the end of the regular season and took to twitter to express his appreciation to both the fans and the club for their support.
He tweeted:
Andrea Pirlo enjoyed a largely successful footballing career for Italy and Italian clubs Inter Milan, Reggina, Brescia, AC Milan and Juventus. He is considered a player who deserves a seat in football’s hall of fame, though his quiet style of play rarely catches the eye of the average observer. Pirlo was awarded the Serie A best player for three consecutive years from 2012-2014 and he was instrumental in Italy’s World Cup win in 2006.
He retires at the age of 38 and has said that his mind was willing to go on but his body could not keep up with the demand of regular playing and it was time to hang his boot. He had twin children with his partner Valentina Baldini in July but had two children already with his ex-wife.
