Jessica Simpson, Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively, Miley Cyrus, Jada Pickett Smith, and other female celebrities who claim to be sober now after abusing alcohol for long.
For alcoholics, sobriety is a sustained period of time where they are able to function independently of alcohol. While this period differs for many, it is always a cause for celebration when one is successfully weaned off the bottle.
Celebrities have found themselves in situations where they develop an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Besides the health hazard of inebriety, there is also the fact that it affects a person’s ability to function properly in the long run.
Here, we celebrate 7 female celebrities that have managed to stay sober:
1. Jessica Simpson
On 1 November 2021, the 41-year-old singer and fashion icon Jessica Simpson shared a throwback photo of herself at a point in life where she had been mostly reliant on alcohol. In the Instagram post, she acknowledged that her failure to accept and love herself was more of an issue than the alcohol she was consuming. Thus, she made the decision to stop drinking completely. Four years from 1 November 2021, Simpson has remained sober.
“Today I do. I have made nice with the fears and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad. I own my personal power with soulful courage. I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free,” she writes.

2. Lily Allen
English singer, songwriter and actress Lily Allen’s story with alcohol also mirrors Simpson’s above. A close look at her personal life reveals that Allen used to struggle with her body image. BBC reported her confession of being addicted to the prescription drug Adderall in order to lose weight. It didn’t stop there, she also drank heavily and tried to stay in bed as much as possible to avoid eating in order to not gain weight.
The good news is that Lily Allen has broken the shackles of alcohol and has stayed sober for two years. Also, she is now married to actor David Harbour, after her marriage to Sam Cooper ended due to her several acts of infidelity.
3. Naomi Campbell
The British supermodel combined alcohol and other controlled substances. However, she caught the ugly habit early and decided to join both an Alcoholics Anonymous group and a Narcotics Anonymous meeting to nip it in the bud. Yet, the problem persisted for many years before she could kick the habit completely.
Speaking to Vogue UK back then, she underlined the periods between 1998 and 2005 as ‘especially bad’. The biggest lesson from Naomi Campbell’s story is her relentless fight to get better. Besides attending meetings and joining a group, she also checked into rehab as well. Now, she has been sober for more than a decade.
4. Rumer Willis
American actress and singer Rumer Willis, daughter of Demi Moore and actor Bruce Willis, has been sober for nearly four years. She used to be a heavy drinker until one decision in January 2017 turned her life around. According to an interview she had with People Magazine, she had only tried to do a ‘no alcohol January’ but kept going.
It didn’t take her long to realize that she actually didn’t miss drinking and she never looked back!
5. Anne Hathaway
In 2019 Anne Hathaway did the most memorable thing that made her fans love her more. The actress announced that she was going to be sober for 18 years, and the reason was all because of her son.
The Oceans Eight actor explained this during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, she said: “I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years. I’m going to stop drinking while my son is in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings.”
6. Kate Moss
If there’s one thing that Kate Moss is popular for asides from being a supermodel, it is partying with her group of London friends in the early 2000s. However, in 2018, the supermodel decided to go sober and she has stayed that way since then.
Two years after going sober, Moss had an interview with Elle, where she gave details of how her life had taken a different turn since she became sober. She said: “[I go to bed] at 11 pm-ish, and watch Netflix before I go to sleep,” she continued. “[I wake up] around 8 am. I’m a bit groggy in the afternoon if I don’t get eight hours of sleep.”
7. Heather Locklear
American actress Heather Locklear got into trouble with the law several times before she decided to seek treatment and go sober in April 2019, and in April 2020, after a year of successfully staying sober, the Melrose Place alum couldn’t help but celebrate. Celebrating one year of sobriety via Instagram in April 2020, she wrote: “Hugs will come later!”
