Canada to legalise recreational m*rijuana by July 2018

The ruling Liberal government of Canada is set to announce legislation that will decriminalise the recreational use of m*rijuana also called cannabis in the country by July 2018 the CBC News reports. The legislation will be announced on 10th April and will follow broadly the recommendation by a federally appointed task force constituted for the purpose which was chaired by a former liberal Justice Minister Anne McLellan. While the federal government will be responsible for ensuring that a safe and secured supply of the plant and will set a minimum age requirement of 18 years for its use, Provinces, however, will be tasked with sales control and are free to raise the age limit for its consumption. Households wishing to grow their own m*rijuana plant are limited to four plants per household.

Legalisation of m*rijuana was one of the most controversial campaign promises made by the Prime Minister Justin Tradeau. Liberals believe that is was necessary to “legalise, regulate and restrict access to m*rijuana” so as to keep drugs “out of the hands of children, and the profits out of the hands of criminals.”

While Canada is not exactly at the forefront of decriminalisation of the possession, however, the medical use of the plant has been allowed in the country since 2001. Other countries where medical use of m*rijuana is legal include: Colombia (possession of up to 20 grammes of the drug is also allowed but it is criminal to smoke it in public), Czech Republic, Romania, France, Germany and some states in the USA. Recreational m*rijuana use is legal in Netherlands, Uruguay and four states in the USA (Alaska, Colorado and   Colorado, Oregon and Washington). Furthermore, four other states including (California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada) in the US have voted to decriminalise the recreational use of the drug bring the expected number of states to eight.
