Brazil becomes the first country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup following their win over Paraguay on Tuesday, the Guardian reports. The 3-0 win marks Brazil’s eighth successive win in the South American qualifying competition. That in itself was not enough to confirm their participation in Russia but Peru’s surprise 2-1 win over Uruguay in a later game guaranteed Brazil a top-four finish.
There are still 4 games left in the qualifying series for the group. Colombia is second with 24 points while Uruguay and Chile each has 23 points. Argentina is in fifth place with 22 points. However, Uruguay and Argentina still have to face each other which means it is impossible for both to overtake Brazil.
