1. Introduction of new housemates
Fans of the Big Brother show are no strangers to introduction of new housemates in the course of the show. The show runners however seem to always have something up their sleeves with each occurrence. In the maiden edition of the show which aired in 2006, two new contestants were introduced on day 23. This changed the dynamics of the game, and Ebuka who prior to then was the fans’ favorite soon got evicted. Of the two new housemates; Katung Aduwak and Sandy, it was the former who emerged winner. That however has been the first and only time that a new contestant won the show.
In the follow-up season tagged ‘See Gobe’ which aired in 2017, Big Brother introduced a total of four new housemates. Two of them (Debbie Rise & Bassey) who joined the house in the second week were real housemates, while the other two (Jon Ogah & Ese) who joined in week 4 were fake housemates whose job was to spice things up.
Fans did not witness the introduction of new housemates again until season 4 of the show. The Pepper Dem season had a total of 5 new housemates introduced over the course of 3 days. The pair of Venita and Elozonam joined the house on Day 30, Joe and Enkay on Day 31, and Cindy came in on Day 32. The following season had no new housemates. It remains to see if that will be introduced again in the coming BBNaija season.
2. Fake housemates
So far, only season 2 of the show has had fake housemates. Jon Ogah and Ese Eriata joined the contestants in week 4 as new housemates. Since there had been a similar occurrence in week 2 when Debbie Rise and Bassey joined, there was no cause for suspicion for the other housemates. Unknown to them however, Jon and Ese were fake housemates tasked with the job of causing chaos in the house. It was an interesting dynamic that made things livelier as both of them brought more drama to the game.
3. Fake evictions
Week 4 in the season 4 of the show saw yet another interesting twist added to the drama. Seyi and Tacha were fake-evicted on Sunday only to be moved to a secret room where they spent the week away from the others who all thought they were gone for good. The secret room availed Seyi and Tacha the chance to know each other better. On their return to the house, they were welcomed and treated like royalty just as Big Brother had requested. Their return initiated a fresh bout of drama that entertained viewers for weeks. We haven’t seen fake evictions again since then.
4. Return of evictees
Fans were shocked to hear that Big Brother was bringing back two of the eleven already evicted housemates. This was announced by the show host Ebuka on week 7 of season 3. All viewers had to do was vote for the housemate they’ll love to see go back to the house. Khloe and Anto emerged with the most votes and were sneaked back into the house in week 9 while everyone slept. Imagine the shock of the other housemates when they woke the next day to find them back.

5. Early and surprise evictions
Until season 4, it was believed that it is customary that the first week of the show is a week of grace (eviction free). This notion was cleared when Big Brother announced on the second Sunday that there will be an eviction game. Housemates soon gathered in the arena to battle for their safety. This game led to the early eviction of Avala and Isilomo. They had only spent a week in the house, making them the housemates with the shortest stay so far.
6. Others
The list of twists and turns in the Big Brother show is endless. The show runners switch things up every now and then in different ways. The immediate past season saw us witness a nomination and eviction style that had never been seen before on the show. All housemates were automatically up for eviction each week, and they had to decide through a secret vote who among those with the lowest votes will leave or stay.
Season 4 also had a nomination style where housemates were split into two groups and competed in ‘nomination games’. All members of the losing team were automatically up for eviction. The season ended with more dramatic twists like the ultimate veto power which Frodd won to book a spot in the finale, and Big Brother’s announcement of the importance of the Bet9ja coins. The coins ultimately secured Mercy Eke a place in the finale where she emerged winner.
What the new season would be like is yet to be seen, but it promises to be as entertaining as ever, and we are here for it. The show has a new headline sponsor and the biggest grand prize ever. We can’t wait for the drama that awaits, and we bet you can’t either!
