Since 1999, she has been a professional German football referee and in 2007 she also became the first German professional football female referee. She officiated the 2012 Olympic women’s football gold medal match.

On Thursday, she was the referee giving the duties to officiate the match between Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen by the German Football Body and history was set in place.
Steinhaus also works as a policewoman and is 38 years old. Werder Bremen’s coach had earlier praised performances and said she deserved the honor.
The match ended in a one goal draw.
