Olamide Biography: Early life and education

Olamide was born as Olamide Adedeji in Bariga, Lagos State on 15th March 1989. He started his early schooling in Lagos State and completed his primary and secondary education there. After this, he left the state for his tertiary education. He eventually obtained his first degree in mass communication from the Tai Solarin University of Education in Ogun State as a part-time student.

Thereafter, Olamide began to pursue a career in music. His big break did not come immediately as we will see in the next section.

Olamide Biography: Music career

Early career

According to online sources, Olamide Adedeji had been trying his hands at singing and especially rapping since a young age. While he was still studying for his degree at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Olamide was honing his skills. He was relatively popular during his university days as an undiscovered talent.

He started rapping in 2000 and the artist always believed he was gifted and says as much when asked. It has always been what he wanted to do. Olamide had been part of a rap group called Naughty Pound. At age 16, Olamide’s group had a song that Lord of Ajasa produced in 2005. Lord of Ajasa also introduced the group to ID Cabasa because he was busy with other projects, while Naughty Pound did not have any money to master their record, it was Olamide’s jackpot to fame.

Eni Duro (2010)

Without doubt, Olamide became what he is because of the success of his 2010 debut single, “Eni Duro”. It is one of the most lyrically heavy songs to have dropped in Nigeria that period and it features about five minutes of hardcore Yoruba rap. It came at a time when the late DaGrin had whetted the appetite of many music fans to appreciate Nigerian street hip-hop. Thus, many argued that “DaGrin walked so that Olamide could fly.”

While Olamide himself did not dispute this fact, it was his own core talent, outstanding flow and delivery skills that served his audience a memorable sound experience in Eni Duro.

Street talent scout ID Cabasa had signed Olamide into his Coded Tunes record label, and it was under the company that “Eni Duro” officially dropped. It made Olamide a hot commodity and one year later, he had a debut album ready.

Rapsodi (2011)

“Rapsodi” was Olamide’s debut album and it was released under Coded Tunes record label. The album houses 16 tracks.

Olamide teamed up with another sensation of that moment – Wizkid – on a song titled “Omo To Shan”, which appeared on the album.

While Rapsodi held other collaborative tracks with hot Nigerian singers like D’banj, 9ice, Reminisce, Lord of Ajasa and ID Cabasa, the two tracks, “Eni Duro” and “Omo To Shan” were undoubtedly its biggest push.

This early start saw Olamide nominated in The Headies 2011 Next Rated category and “Rapsodi” nominated as Best Rap Album the next year. While he didn’t win in either nomination, it was a major leap for Olamide who had just shot to fame in 2010.

YBNL (2012)

The year after his first major project, Olamide appeared to be relentless and he was keeping other Nigerian rappers on their toes. Between the end of 2011 and late into 2012, he released steaming hot singles such as “Voice of the Street”, “First of All”, “Ilefo Illuminati” and “Stupid Love”. During that period, Olamide’s singles were getting so much airplay that even children knew difficult lyrics from his rap tracks.

The rapper has also left Coded Tunes record label, a move that seemed to be an amicable decision. He set up his own record label, YBNL Nation. The acronym YBNL is translated as ‘Yahoo Boy No Laptop’. Olamide seemed to be projecting the idea that he could live as lavishly as the popular internet scammers ‘Yahoo Boy’ without engaging in criminal activities.

On 12th November 2012, Olamide released his second studio album titled “YBNL”. It was widely regarded as one of the most solid albums in Nigeria that year and it contains 20 songs of which only four were official singles. He featured Kay Switch, Tiwa Savage, Dammy Krane, Davido, Kidakudz, Reminisce, Base 1, Buckwyla and Minus 2 on the album.

Producers like Pheelz, Samklef, ID Cabasa, 2Kriss and Tyrone worked on the YBNL album and tuned it until it was a masterpiece. This time, Olamide clinched the Best Rap Album and Album of the Year awards at The Headies 2013. And it was far from over…

Baddest Guy Ever Liveth (2013)

Just after he had released YBNL, Olamide started working on a third album by late 2012. In May 2013, he dropped the single “Durosoke”. It became an instant hit in Nigeria and it drowned out “Turn Up”, Olamide’s second single of 2013. “Yemi My Lover” dropped in October 2013 and it was a new sort of Olamide that fans witnessed.

Olamide eventually released his third album, “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth” on 7th November 2013. Pheelz produced 20 of the 21 tracks, and V.I.C produced just one. The album got mixed receptions as critics said some of the tracks sounded more like freestyles than actual songs. However, it got more positive reviews than negative ones. Besides the singles, tracks such as “Dope Money” (featuring Phyno), “Sitting on the Throne”, “Eleda Mi O”, “Anifowose”, and “Rayban Abacha” were individually praised.

Olamide later released “Eleda Mi O” as a single in January 2014 and dropped a video for it and for “Anifowose”, which received massive positive reviews. He also recorded one video for “Sitting on the Throne” as well.

Repeating his 2013 feat, Olamide’s “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth” claimed the Best Rap Album and Album of the Year awards at The Headies 2014. It also won the Best Album of the Year award at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards 2014.

Street OT (2014)

Coming off of the back of strong four successive years, Olamide dropped his fourth studio album on 14th November 2014 under his YBNL Nation record label. Before the album’s launch, the award-winning rapper had dropped two singles, “Story for The Gods” and “Goons Mi”. His fourth album featured 22 tracks and he enlisted the services of Pasuma, Lil Kesh, Chinko Ekun, Phyno, Don Jazzy and Reminisce.

This time, Pheelz shared producing duties with Young John, who was the rave of the moment then. B-Banks was also credited as ‘secondary producer’ on the album.

Besides the two lead singles, few songs from the album were catchy. “Blood Money”, “Skelemba” (featuring Don Jazzy), “Falila Ketan”, and “Hustle Loyalty Respect” (featuring Reminisce) were some of the memorable songs from the “Street OT” album.

The album received a mixed critical reception from the media and while the positive reviews were more, the negative feedbacks were quite ‘loud’ as well. Yet, “Street OT” won the Album of the Year at The Headies 2015, marking the third consecutive time that Baddoo was winning the prestigious award. It was also nominated again in the Best Rap Album category but it lost this time.

2 Kings (2015)

In April 2015, Olamide did something new by releasing a joint album with Igbo hip hop star, Phyno. The latter has appeared on many of Olamide’s tracks and they were close friends. The duo released “2 Kings” under Penthauze Music and YBNL Nation record labels.

They had released singles like “Ghost Mode” and “Dope Money”, which appeared in previous albums. The lead singles for “2 Kings” were “Une” by Phyno and “Confam Ni” by Olamide featuring Wizkid.

The joint album contained 10 tracks and only the two lead singles did not feature the two artists together; they collaborated on the remaining eight tracks. Pheelz, Young John, Major Bangz and B.Banks all worked on different songs on the album.

The album received an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, and it won Mixtape of The Year at the TooXclusive Awards 2015. “Ladi” was one of the memorable tracks that the album produced, Olamide and Phyno had featured teenage wonder Lil Kesh on the song.

Eyan Mayweather (2015)

As has become a tradition for the “Eni Duro” crooner, he released his fifth studio album, Eyan Mayweather, on 23rd November 2015 under YBNL Nation. This time, Olamide did not feature any artist and did the singing all by himself. However, ID Cabasa returned to work with the rapper along with his in-house producers – Pheelz, B.Banks and Young John.

The lead singles from the album were ear bursting and trendsetting songs such as “Bobo”, “Melo Melo”, “Lagos Boys” and “Matters Arising”.

“Bobo” was crowned the Certified Banger of The Year and “Melo Melo” won Video Wonder of the Year at TooXclusive Awards 2015. “Eyan Mayweather” won Album of the year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEAs) 2016. However, it became Olamide’s first album not to be nominated at The Headies.

The Glory (2016)

Olamide’s sixth studio album, “The Glory”, came out a month later than usual on 23rd December 2016. He released it under his own record label, YBNL Nation. The Cable reported that it debuted at the sixth position on the World Albums chart in its first week and was number 14 in its second week on Billboard music charts. At the time, no other Nigerian artist was on the Billboard music charts besides Olamide.

“The Glory” album contains 16 tracks and features Phyno, Wande Coal, Burna Boy, Akuchi and Davolee. Perhaps, the most popular song on the album was the single “Pepper Dem Gang” featuring Davolee. It became a pop reference in Nigeria and quickly became a trend and a popular saying. There was also the “Who You Epp” track with Phyno and Wande Coal that likely contended for the most popular song of the year.

Other worthy mentions from “The Glory” album include “Letter To Milli”, “Omo Wobe Anthem” and “Owo Blow”. The album failed to win after being nominated for The Headies 2018 under Best Rap Album.

Lagos Nawa (2017)

In 2017, Olamide stayed true to his consistency of dropping an album every year. He released his seventh studio album, “Lagos Nawa” in December 2017, and it is one of his less talked about albums. Lagos Nawa was strictly produced by Young John.

Olamide featured Timaya, Reminisce, Phyno, and Tiwa Savage. The album contained songs like “Wo!!!”, “Wo Spiritual”, “Shine”, “Radio Lagos”, “Fe Nu Shey Street”, “Everyday Is Not Christmas” and “Bend It Over”.

There were rumours that Lagos Nawa was made within a 48-hour time frame according to Delani Blog. Of its 17 songs, the biggest was the lead single, “Wo!!!” While the album may have not done well as expected, Wo!! was a massive success. It was a club banger and still is down to this day. The song was nominated in the Song of the Year category at The Headies 2018.

Mafia Family (2018)

Olamide’s YBNL Nation released an album titled “Mafia Family“. It is generally counted as the rapper’s official eighth studio album. “Mafia Family” contains 13 songs and Olamide appears in only about eight of them. Artists signed under his record label got their shots as well. It features FireBoy’s hit track “Jealous”, Lil Kesh’s “Le Le Yi” as well as Picazzo’s “Macaroni” and Limerick’s “Lie”.

Olamide’s songs dominated the list with “Motigbana” and “Poverty Die” among the biggest tracks on the album.

Olamide 2019

2019 was the only year that Olamide did not drop a major project and he chose to drop singles such as “Pawon”. “Pawon” was a big success and it led to an Instagram trend.

Olamide, who is also popularly called Baddo Sneh released “Woske” in 2019 as well. Arguably the biggest song from that year was “Totori”, which was a joint work between himself, Wizkid and ID Cabasa.

999 EP (2020)

On 9th February 2020, Olamide released his first major project in nearly two years, an EP titled “999” that was officially released under YBNL Nation record label. It contained nine tracks of solid rap songs with production contributions from Pheelz, ID Cabasa, Eskeez and Cracker Mallo. STG, a sound engineer mixed and mastered the EP.

Olamide had not given a hint about the project until it was just about to be released. He featured Phyno, Rhatti, Show, Cheque, Jayboi, Sosa-E and Jackmillz on the project.

While praising the project, Pulse described it as “anti-climatic“. Additionally, for a rap project, “999” is filled to the brim with bars after bars as the featured artists and Olamide gave their all.

Carpe Diem (2020)

Olamide released Carpe Diem, his official eighth studio album or ninth one if you count the YBNL Nation Mafia Family, in October 2020 under Empire Distribution, an American record label and distribution company. It was the first major project that Olamide released under another record label since he founded YBNL Nation.

He had signed a venture deal with Empire Distribution in February 2020. Olamide featured Fireboy DML, Bad Boy Timz, Omah Lay, Phyno, Peruzzi and Bella Shmurda on some of the 11 tracks on the album. Young John Pheelz, ID Cabasa, P.Prime and VStix all received credit as producers.

The Native Mag said about Carpe Diem: “The veteran hitmaker is confidently seizing the moment with the new release, showcasing not only his ability to grow and adapt sonically with the changing times but also his penchant for discovering some of the hottest talent brewing underground in Nigeria’s musical landscape.”

Carpe Diem covers a range of topics including mental health, toxic masculinity and more. When speaking to Pulse about the album in an interview, Olamide mentioned that he aimed to give listeners “a feel of diversity.” Also, since the album release had coincided with the EndSARS protests, the promotional work had to slow down.

Besides his own songs, Olamide is popular for bringing fire to songs that he is featured in. Songs that readily prove this are Masterkraft’s “Indomie”, Harrysong’s “Reggae Blues” and Reminisce’s “Local Rappers”.

Olamide Biography: Personal life

The rapper has three children from two different women. His first child is Maximilian Boluwatife, who was born on 30th January 2015. Olamide announced his birth via his Twitter and Instagram pages.

Boluwatife was born just before Olamide lost his mother, Ronke Osisanya Adedeji. Then Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, attended Maximilian’s naming ceremony on 6th February 2015.

Adebukumi Aisha Suleiman is Olamide’s first partner and baby mama. She gave birth to Maximilian Boluwatife and later bore him another son, Tunrepin Myles Adedeji on 1st July 2019 in a hospital in the United States of America.

There were reports that Olamide was engaged to Adebukumi in 2018 and that the two of them had been in a relationship for about seven years at the time.

Olamide’s second lover and baby mama is Maria Okanrende, an on-air personality who worked at Beat FM. Their relationship was short-lived but they welcomed a daughter, Asaiah Monife Maria, together on 16th August 2019.

Olamide Biography: Controversy

While he keeps representing the streets in style and sound, Olamide’s controversies have always been about some of his songs and not about something he engaged in physically.

In 2019, Baddo found himself in the midst of a controversy over his verse on Lil Kesh’s “Logo Benz”. People criticised the rapper for supporting ritual killings and ill-gotten money shortcuts.

Also, many have criticised several of his other songs for supporting vices like rape, drug abuse and internet fraud. Tracks like “Science Student” and “Duro Soke” have put Olamide in trouble with the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) as well.

Olamide Biography: Net worth

There is no official information from Forbes on what Olamide is worth in 2020, but local blogs claim that the artist is worth between $10 million to $14 million in 2020. There is no information on how they arrived at such estimates, so we will not advise that you quote the figure as a fact.

However, without a doubt, Olamide is one of the biggest entertainers in Nigeria and likely among the richest. There are rumours that he charges between NGN3 million to NGN5 million for events. Olamide also hosts his own shows at the end of the year. On average, the rapper headlines about 50 to 70 shows every year.

Besides the money he makes from making music, Olamide is also a major brand ambassador for top brands. In 2020, he currently holds an ambassadorial position at Itel, a budget smartphone maker that is popular in Nigeria.

He was a brand ambassador for Goldberg Lager in 2019. Play TV signed him as a brand ambassador in 2018. Olamide has also worked with Sterling Bank, Etisalat (now known as 9Mobile), Glo, Monster, and many more brands.

As of 2019, Olamide is known to have many cars including a Toyota Camry (worth about NGN4 million), Range Rover Sports (wort about NGN15 million), Range Rover V8, and Mercedes-Benz G Class (A.K.A G-Wagon; worth about NGN23 million). He also allegedly has many houses across Nigeria with the most famous one being his mansion in Lekki, Lagos State.

Olamide also posted the picture of a newly acquired Lamborghini Aventador worth about $421,300. It appears that he is adding the ‘Lambo’ to his fleet of cars.

YBNL Nation

Olamide founded Yahoo Boy No Laptop Nation, popularly known as YBNL Nation or simply YBNL, an independent record label in 2012. He signed Lil Kesh, Viktoh, Chinko Ekun, Adekunle Gold, Xino, Davolee, Lyta, Picazo Rhap, Pelepele, Limerick, Yomi blaze, DJ Enimoney, Fireboy DML, B.Banks and Temmie Ovwasa as artists.

In-house producers included Pheelz, Young John, B-Banks and Vinkihill. Olamide’s YBNL Nation has frequently come under criticism because of the mass exodus of artists. Many say that Baddo is not invested in helping young artists reach their zenith or that he doesn’t quite understand the business side of music well.

However, there are lots of stars that made their names while under the record label and the critics seem to only highlight deals that didn’t work out perfectly.

Final thoughts…

Olamide is almost every music fans’ favourite artist. There is that one song of his that you agree is perfect. Olamide’s consistency is one of the most legendary things the Nigerian music industry has seen. Also, while he is experimental, he is loyal to his style and brand and this makes it easier for him to keep faithful fans for such a long time.

Olamide is also a doer and he does not back down, at least not for long. If he drops off the scene for some time, he returns with solid projects as proof. He will go down in history books as one of the biggest indigenous rappers to ever cradle the microphone in Nigeria.
