Laycon Biography: Career
According to an interview he granted to African Magic, he developed a passion for music from an early age. However, like so many before him, he did not immediately pursue a career in music having first had a stint in the corporate and public worlds.
Let us first take a look at his career at those times before we delve into his impressive music career.
Corporate career
As we have mentioned earlier, Laycon or Olamilekan Agbeleshe (his real name), had discovered his music talent early in life. But while he waited to chart his path in the music industry, he was also making ends meet in the corporate world.
While he was still studying for his bachelor’s degree, Laycon was also working as a personal assistant to the CEO and managing director of Latjum Global Nigeria Limited. We couldn’t find much about this company but DNB Stories claims the firm was an oil and gas marketing company based in Lagos State.
On graduating, Laycon was employed as a sales and business development at Bestman Games. The company’s page describes it as a leading African games company based in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Not long after he started work at the games company, Laycon got an appointment with the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy. Working at the State government level, Laycon was the personal assistant to the assistant director (Welfare) of Administration and Human Resources of the ministry.
During this time, Laycon was also trying his hand at working as a freelance writer. He managed to juggle his job and the pursuit of his musical passion.
Music career
Laycon is a talented singer and rapper and has made a name for himself in the music industry as an upcoming artist. Likely, his most outstanding accomplishment is his 2019 song, titled Fierce. Laycon acknowledges that this is his most impressive feat to date.
Here is how he described it during his pre-season interview with African Magic, just before he went into the Big Brother Naija (BBNAija) House: “I’d say having my song ‘Fierce’ on MTV BASE Top ten charts for six months, still tops every other thing I have done.”
This is rightfully something to be proud of. Laycon featured other rappers like Chinko Ekun and indigenous superstar, Reminisce. As of the time of writing this article, the song’s video has garnered nearly 350K views on YouTube.
But that was not all, Laycon also has an E.P titled Who Is Laycon?, a body of work containing eight songs. Most of the tracks on the E.P have thousands of views on YouTube as well.
Thus, it is not a far-fetched assumption to say that Laycon was well-grounded and already on his way to becoming a music star when he entered the BBNaija Season 5 house.
Now, let us look at Laycon’s journey so far in the competition.
Laycon in Big Brother Naija 2020
On entering the Big Brother Naija 2020 house, Olamilekan Agbeleshe, or Laycon as he is more widely known, immediately became one of the fans’ favourites. This was partly because of evidence of his high intellect when he was interacting with fellow housemates.
It did not take long for him to get a dedicated fan base outside the House that called themselves, Icons and used hashtags like #TeamIcons or #TeamIcon.
Meanwhile, in the house, Laycon became mixed up in a love triangle with fellow housemates and contestants, Kiddwaya and Erica.
As it were, Erica is romantically attracted to Kiddwaya but seems to like Layton as a friend. Laycon on his part seems to be dying for her attention. It has led to many fans chastening the rapper on social media and advising him to move on.

Despite this, Laycon still seems to be one of the favourite housemates as he has stayed out of the bottom four after every eviction round since the show began. It also seems that he is getting over Erica but time will prove whether that was the case or not. Meanwhile, away from the House, Laycon scored a first just three days after the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), Season 5 Lockdown edition began on 19th July 2020 as he got verified on Instagram. He was the first housemate in the season to get the blue check on 22nd July 2020.
His Instagram handle, @itslaycon has over 1.5M followers as at the time of writing.
Laycon is also loved by some celebrities who see him as one of their own. Nigerian singer, Small Doctor has openly called for others to support Laycon. Singer Teni has also shown support for him.
Even the show sponsors, Big Brother Naija, wrote a blog post that praised Laycon and seemed to try to tarnish his supposed rival, Kiddwaya’s reputation. They later issued an apology after it caused outrage and then took down the post.
Remember that while all these were going on, the housemates were blissfully unaware. Hopefully, someone is documenting it for them.
Laycon wins Big Brother Naija 2020 (Season 5)
After many weeks in the house, it became clear that Laycon and fellow housemate, Erica, were favourites to emerge as winners of Big Brother Naija 2020. Their fans outside the House were doing all they could to ensure that their faves kept getting votes.
However, just three weeks from the end of the show, Erica fell out of the race. Ironically, it involved her closest rival, Laycon. After the Saturday night party on 5th September 2020, Erica had gotten into a dispute with Laycon. She mentioned that he had been lying to housemates about her and that he was always trying to use her name to trend. Eventually, she let her guard down and started making death threats and other hurtful remarks about Laycon.
She was angry believing that Laycon intentionally talked about her, spreading lies in the process, just to have his name trending outside the house. However, during the whole altercation, Laycon did not reply her and just kept quiet.
She also prevented her deputy head of house, Prince, from sleeping in the Head of house lounge by wetting the bed. Thus, the very next day, 6th September 2020, Big Brother gathered the housemates together and after outlining her offences, Erica was disqualified for receiving her third and final strike.
Prior to the incident, she had gotten two strikes for other offences. One of them was whispering to Kiddwaya when they were about to nominate other housemates. The other strike was for flipping Big Brother off when she and Kiddwaya were in the HOH lounge.
With Erica out of the way, Laycon had little or no competition from the other finalists, namely: Dorothy, Nengi, Vee and Neo. He eventually, he secured 60% of the votes in the final. Ebuka, the official BBNaija Season 5 host, announced him as the winner.
