The actress has a mixed ethnic background as she is of British origin on her father’s side and Filipino on her mother’s side. Doig was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is the younger child of Gloria B. Lecciones and David W. Doig. Her mother is a registered nurse who originally came from Dumaguete City, Philippines, while her father is a Canadian engineer of Scottish and Irish ancestry who was a petroleum executive officer in Toronto. 

As a child, Doig studied rhythmic gymnastics, and, as a teenager, she studied American Sign Language. She dropped out of high school in her last year to fully concentrate on her modelling career.

Lexa started up as a model after graduating from the Don Mills Collegiate Institute and later enrolled in the vocational modelling program. While she was still studying there, she got a lot of modelling offers, which became the platform she used to rise to fame. At age 16, she was offered representation by a talent agent and booked in various modelling projects. As a result, she started appearing in TV commercials.

It is set in deep space and revolves around the adventures of Dylan Hunt, captain of the Andromeda Ascendant, his crew members, and their efforts to restore the Systems Commonwealth, a government that was responsible for a time of extended peace and prosperity. In the show, Lexa portrays Rommie (short for Andromeda), the humanoid avatar of the Andromeda Ascendant.
