The staff of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has embarked on a strike on effective from Thursday, 7 January 2021 and suspended registration for the National Identity Number, NIN.
As Nigerian are racing to meet the extended deadline to register for the National Identity Number, NIN, the staff union of the commission in charge has downed tools in a strike action.
The Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) of the NIMC went on strike on Thursday.
According to the union, the strike is a protests against the following; poor welfare packages, lack of tools, and risk of exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Micheal Asekokhai, ASCSN NIMC unit and Victor Odia, the union’s secretary, released a statement announcing the strike.

Members of the union had met and discussed how staff members were at risk of contracting COVID-19. They also discussed their salary structure, its representation in the annual appropriation and the irregular process of promotions.
The outcome of the meeting was that they should embark on a strike until their demands are met. Part of the statement available online reads:
“Consequent upon the just concluded congress of the above-mentioned association that took place on January 6, 2020, the unit executive directs all members of grade level 12 and below in the head office and state offices to report to their respective duty posts tomorrow January 7, 2020, and do nothing.”
Additionally, they will have their task force and implementation committees make the rounds and enforce compliance.
