The award holds this distinction not only because it is usually the first award show every year, but also the glitz, the glam, the fun, the inspiring and most times hilarious award speeches, and my personal favourite, the memes!
The award has always been a light and jovial affair, but not entirely this year. That’s owing to the string of sexual assaults revelations over the past few months that had rocked Hollywood starting with the accusations against Harvey Weinstein and spilling to several high profile personalities not only in Hollywood but also in the media and other major corporate entities in the US.
The developments unsurprisingly led to the inspiring and innovative moment Time’s Up. Consequently, this year’s award had a serious vibe to it culminating in Oprah Winfrey’s well-received presidential-like speech, where the media mogul called for the empowerment of women in all industries. Not forgetting Natalie Portman’s “and here are the all-male nominees,” for the best director category, drawing attention to gender inequality. Gender inequality notwithstanding, isn’t the award based on the quality of work and not a gender?

With all these going on and more, one might have expected a dampened the aura of the show. Far be it from anything and anyone to ruin the Golden Globes. Beyond the recognition of creativity, hard work and success, the 75th annual Golden Globes awards was one of the best in history.
It is not every year that Hollywood’s most prominent women band together in solidarity to combat sexual harassment. That is why this year’s award show was more than what people all over the world had originally perceived it to be – that time of the year where everyone who is everyone and everyone who is someone puts their stylist to test, show off their fashion and flair, and come right to receive what they’ve earned which sometimes is a trophy and sometimes it’s comedy.
Take it from me, this year’s Golden Globes was nothing short of perfection, but hey who am I to try and sway you without proof?
