The shooting happened outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino during a country music festival. Jason Aldean was performing. The gunman, identified by police as Stephen Paddock, was later found dead by officers on the 32nd floor of the hotel, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said during a news briefing. Paddock was 64. Police are now looking for a woman who may be connected to the attack. Flights were temporarily paused at the nearby international airport.
Paddock’s brother, Eric, told Reuters that the family was stunned by what happened.
“We have no idea,” Eric Paddock told the news agency. “We’re horrified. We’re bewildered and our condolences go out to the victims. We have no idea in the world.”
Police say that this was a lone wolf attack and that the suspect is a local man from Las Vegas. They’ve urged anyone with pictures or videos to get in touch with them as they try to figure out the details about what happened and when.
Meanwhile, the US president, Donald Trump reached out to victims this morning via Twitter. “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!”
