For the first time in history, Twitter is changing its character limit. The company announced Tuesday that it would begin testing a new limit of 280 characters for all languages except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. The change will apply only to a single-digit percentage of Twitter users at first over the next few weeks before it’s made available broadly. Apparently, those writing in the three excluded languages can convey more of thoughts per character than those writing in other languages, hence the exclusion. See the image below for illustration.
According to Twitter, 9% of tweets in English hit the 140-character limit vs. only 0.4% in Japanese, which suggested that certain languages could benefit from having more available characters for tweets. it is, therefore, hoping that people writing in Twitter will embrace the change. While change will, for the time being, affect only a “small group of people” but Twitter will eventually make it available to everyone. But all users will be able to see longer tweets.
