What with Marvel’s comic “Blessing in Disguise” and an HBO deal to develop her book “Who fears death” in the bag, it certainly has been a good year for Nigeria-born fantasy author, Nnedi Okorafor, PhD. Her latest project, “Akata Warrior” is being released by Penguin early next month, and reviews so far say the book is certainly worth a read, with one reviewer wondering whether Okorafor is the next George R R Martin?
The book is a follow-up of the previously released “Akata Witch” by the same author. The book tells the story of Sunny Nwazue, an American-born girl Nigerian girl who discovers that she has supernatural powers and must confront her destiny and avert an apocalypse.
A report that appears in the Chicago Magazine says that it took the author six years to write the book. The author it is said made several trips to Africa because she “Needed to travel and gather and listen.” She dug into her research at home, even stumbling upon Nigerian mythology. The magazine report further added that Okorafor’s “Diligence shows: The writing is confident, sweeping, and steeped in magic, including an entire subplot about an ancient Igbo ideographic script.”
