World Athletics Championships: Ese Brume and Blessing Okagbare-Ighuteguonor seek to make history

Nigeria’s Ese Brume and team captain Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor will both be competing in the long jump event later this evening in the 2017 World Athletics Championships holding in London.

The duo will be seeking to become the first Nigerian women to compete at the same championships for places in final of the event and follow in the footsteps of their male counterparts Yusuf Ali and Paul Emordi who both competed in the semi-final and qualified for the final of the event in 1987 in Rome.

Wish them luck.

Meanwhile, Glory Onome Nathaniel was disqualified from competing in the semifinals of Women 400m yesterday for what was described as possible lane infringement ending her dream of becoming the first Nigerian woman to make the final of the 400m barrier run. She ran a new 55.30 personal best during the qualifying stage at the championships. Henry Amike remains the only Nigerian man to have qualified and ran in the final of a 400m race at the championships. The record holder in the event ran 48.63 seconds in Rome in 1987 at the second edition of the championships to place 6th in a race the great Edwin Moses of the US won with a 47.46 seconds championships record.

Okagbare had also previously clashed out of the Women 100m event as her 11.08s during the semifinals proved inadequate to advance her tot he finals.
