Five movies that have gone on to win Oscars following wins at the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival produced a winner in the name of Swedish Director Ruben Östlund for his work “The Square”, which tells the story of a museum director (played by Claes Bang). The director, who was desperate to make a success of his gallery, stages a new installation called “The Square” to promote to it. The movie reportedly made a strong favourable impression following its screening on the 19^th May 2017 and went on to win the highly coveted Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, against all predictions.

Following the win, it is only natural to speculate on the chances of The Square to win an Oscar at the next Academy Award, as some movies have gone on to do. Fortunately, guys at Daily News Analysis (DNA) have drawn up a list of five movies that have set such precedent following wins at Cannes Festival.

 

1. The Piano (1993)

Set in the mid-19th century New Zealand the film revolves around the relationship between a mute piano player and her daughter. The director of this masterpiece Jane Campion was the only female director until now to win the Palme d’Or (Sofia Coppola became the second woman to win Best Director at the Cannes for her movie – The Beguiled). The Piano won in  won in three categories at the 1994 Academy Awards, including

• Best Actress in a Leading Role (Holly Hunter);
• Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Anna Paquin); and
• Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Jane Campion).

 

 

2. Pulp Fiction (1994)

Quentin Tarantino, the critically acclaimed director has gathered a lot of accolades over the years. His sophomore film, Pulp Fiction won the Palme d’Or in the year in 1994 and was nominated for seven Oscars, winning one for  Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Quentin Tarantino

The Pianist (2002)

Directed by one of the most scandalous directors Roman Polanski, The Pianist is a critically acclaimed film which has won recognition across the globe. The biographical drama film is based on a World War II memoir by the Polish-Jewish pianist and composer W?adys?aw Szpilman. The film won the Palme d’Or in 2002 and went on to win 3 Oscars including

• Best Actor in a Leading Role (Adrien Brody);
• Best Director (Roman Polanski); and
• Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay (Ronald Harwood).

 

 

4. The Artist (2011)

This French romantic comedy-drama was directed by Michel Hazanavicius is about black and white silent film that revolves around the relationship of an older silent film star and a rising young actress during the 1930’s. Actor Jean Dujardin won the award for the Best Actor role at Cannes in 2011. The movie won five Oscars the following year in the following categories:

• Best Motion Picture of the Year (Thomas Langmann);
• Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Jean Dujardin);
• Best Achievement in Directing (Michel Hazanavicius);
• Best Achievement in Costume Design (Mark Bridges); and
• Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score (Ludovic Bource).

 

 

5. Amour (2012)

Written and directed by Michael Haneke, this film is about an elderly couple, retired music teachers, Anne and Georges, who have a daughter that lives abroad. The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and also won Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2013 Academy Awards.
